A very important place for every visitor is the Bygdøy peninsula.

A beautiful area full of residential villas, vast meadows, parks and beaches, it is especially famous for its concentration of several museums.

If you want to discover the whole Bygdøy peninsula, set aside at least 1 full day and, in good weather when you can spend time on the beaches, even 2 days.

Museums on Bygdøy

There are several famous museums in the area that you should definitely not miss when visiting Oslo.

  • Fram museum - the most popular museum in Oslo with the original expedition ship Fram is dedicated to the Norwegian polar expeditions
  • Kon Tiki Museet (official website: kon-tiki.no) - museum of the famous Norwegian adventurer and sailor Thor Heyerdahl
  • Norwegian Maritime Museum (official website: marmuseum.no) - extensive exhibitions of Norwegian seafaring from Viking times to the present day
  • Norwegian Folk Museum (official website: norskfolkemuseum.no) - the largest museum on Bygdøy contains several buildings and a large outdoor open-air museum
  • Vikingskipshuset (official website: vikingtidsmuseet.no) - a wonderful museum of Viking voyages with a large original Viking ship
  • Holocaust Centre (official website: hlsenteret.no) - a centre for the study of the Holocaust and religious minorities

Beaches and walks

The Bygdøy peninsula is also a beautiful place for walks among the villas, meadows and forests.

In good weather you can visit several sandy beaches:

  • Huk (see map) - the most popular beach combining sandy, grassy and rocky areas is easily accessible by bus line 30 (stop Huk).
  • Bygdøy sjøbad (see map) - a nice sandy beach by a small marina in a beautiful setting of parks and meadows. The nearest bus stop 30 "Kongsgården" is 1.3 km away
  • Paradisbukta (see map) - the most natural sandy and rocky beach is located on the west coast surrounded by forests. The nearest bus stop 30 "Huk" is 650 metres away

How to get there

Bus number 30 runs across the peninsula and to all the museums, which you can use on your way to the centre (Nationaltheatret, Kvadraturen, Opera).

The bus runs about once every 12-15 minutes and you can find connections via ruter.no.

You can also take the B9 ferry to Bygdøynes near Fram Museum, which runs once every 20 minutes during the summer. Ruter tickets are not valid on this line and you must buy a ticket on board for 79 nok (can only be paid by card).

Accommodation on Bygdøy

Despite its great tourist popularity, there is no classic hotel directly on the peninsula and practically no private apartments.

The closest hotel you will find is the Scandic Sjølyst ****.
