Specifics of the weather in Oslo

Norway is already pretty much in the north, and although Oslo can be found in the southernmost part of the country, latitude is still a significant factor in the weather.

You won't experience tropical temperatures in Oslo even in summer, and days when it's over 26°C are very rare.

Winters here are long, but frosts tend to be relatively mild due to the location by the sea, and winter in Oslo is bearable and often very nice thanks to the romantic snow scenery.

January is the coldest month of the year, with often cloudy skies and snow showers, but especially in central Oslo it can also rain.

Snow showers can be heavy, but Norwegians are used to the cold and traffic collapses due to snow are rare in Oslo.

Weather in March

March is also cold in Oslo and you can't expect much sign of spring yet. After all, March is the main month for ski competitions.

Showers in the mountains around Holmenkollen are almost always in snow, and in the centre it can rain instead of snow. However, March is statistically the poorest month for showers, as it only snows or rains 7 days a month.

The weather in April changes quickly and frequently, but generally showers are short and rarely last more than half a day.

Most showers are rain showers, but snow is no exception, especially early in the month.

Weather in May

During May, spring is finally slowly setting in, with the grass in the parks turning green and the flowers blooming.

Warm clothes are definitely useful, however, as the nights can be very cold. In May, it rains an average of 9 days a month and the showers are torrential. It snows only very rarely.

Weather in June

June is a great month for visiting Oslo and hiking.

Temperatures are pleasant and June has the longest days of the year. The sun may set, but the sky remains slightly twilight throughout the night and you'll never experience total darkness.

Despite June being a summer month, always pack waterproof clothing. Showers, although light and usually only brief, occur on an average of 11 days a month.

August is a relatively warm summer month, but also the rainiest.

On average, it rains 12 days a month and there may be periods when the sky is cloudy for 2-3 days in a row. Nevertheless, August is a great month for visiting the city and hiking in its surroundings.

The leaves on the trees are starting to turn colour and the vast parks and forests are absolutely magical at this time of year.

October is a true autumn month with often chilly weather, but this is replaced by clear or partly cloudy skies.

November is almost a winter month with cold weather and short days.

Showers occur about 11 days a month and there can be periods of 2-4 days straight with overcast skies and rain. Towards the end of the month, snow also appears in the higher elevations of Oslo.

Weather in December

December is the darkest month of the year with the shortest days and cold, drizzly weather.

Showers, which occur an average of 10 days a month, are half rain and half snow.

The skies in December are mostly cloudy, but the pre-Christmas atmosphere in Oslo is beautiful and perfect for short walks around the city interspersed with visits to the many cafés.
