Todai-ji

Todai-ji is a huge Buddhist temple complex, one of the largest in Japan.

It is located in Nara Park and contains dozens of buildings, shrines and halls, the largest of which is also the largest wooden building in Japan.

The largest bronze statue of Buddha

The main tourist attraction is the 16-meter-tall statue of the seated Buddha inside the main wooden hall.

It is the largest bronze Buddha statue in the world and is complemented by other large statues of other deities.

The temple and the bronze Buddha were built in 752 when Nara was the capital of Japan.

Walk around the temple complex

Todai-ji Temple is not just a wooden hall with a Buddha statue, but contains many other shrines and smaller temples.

Between them, there are walking paths through beautiful Japanese gardens with many ponds.

The complex is built into the hillside and from its highest shrine, Nigatsu-do, there are fine views of the city.

Entrance and opening hours

The temple grounds are open daily from 7:30am-5:30pm (April to October) and 8am-5pm (November to March)
