Miyajima in a nutshell

Miyajima

The Japanese island of Itsukushima lies just a few minutes by boat off the coast, about an hour from the city of Hiroshima.

It is mainly known by the name Miyajima, which means "Shrine Island" in Japanese. And the Shinto shrine with its large red torii gate located in the water near the shore is one of the main symbols of Japan.

But Miyajima also offers beautiful treks through forested mountains, a cable car ride up Mount Misen with breathtaking views, beaches and a lively town full of local specialties and shops.

Miyajima is one of the most touristy places in all of Japan, but most tourists only head here as part of a day trip from Hiroshima. We recommend staying here and enjoying the mornings and late evenings with only a minimum of tourists.

Similar to the city of Nara near Osaka, you'll encounter free-roaming sika deer on the streets of Miyajimacho.
