The Jewish Ghetto is located in the heart of the medieval city centre, between the historic centre and the university quarter, and still retains its original structure. It is a maze of alleyways and corridors, covered bridges and small windows telling the hard fate of a community that was forced to live in separation from 1556 before being expelled from the city.
The main artery of the ghetto is Via dell'Inferno, to which a number of smaller streets lead.
There were several entrances to the ghetto, which were constantly guarded, opened in the morning and sealed at sunset: 1. in Via de' Giudei, 2. at the intersection of Via del Carro and Via Zamboni, 3. in Via Oberdan.
