The Basilica di San Petronio is the most important and imposing church in Bologna and is also the 5th largest church in the world.
Building work on the basilica, which stands on the site of many private houses and 8 churches, began in 1390 but continued for centuries. And yet, the building remains unfinished. Only the lower part of the façade is clad in marble, creating a unique two-colour façade.
It is the last great Gothic work created in Italy on the plan of a Latin cross with 3 naves and chapels. Don't miss the Bolognini Chapel with frescoes depicting the stories of the three kings, the Last Judgement, heaven and hell with the gigantic figure of Lucifer and the prophet Mohammed.
Also note the sundial built by Cassini to prove that the Earth revolves around the sun and not the other way around.
