A very unusual, almost bizarre, monument to the billionth barrel of oil produced can be found in the town of Seria on the northwest coast of Brunei.
However, if we look at the monument in its local context, it makes a lot of sense.
Indeed, the small state of Brunei is directly dependent on oil production, with virtually all of its wealth and revenue coming from oil sales.
The monument was built in 1991 to commemorate the extraction of the billionth barrel of oil from the oil fields near the town of Seria.
How to get there
The monument can only be reached conveniently by car or taxi via the DART mobile app.
However, the taxi fare from Bandar Seri Begawan is very high at around 95 bnd.
