What to do in Brunei Darussalam

Brunei

Brunei is a small country and 3 full days will be enough to explore the main attractions. What will you experience in Brunei?

Trekking and a visit to the tropical rainforest

Located in the eastern part of Brunei, Ulu Temburong National Park covers an area of over 50,000 hectares and lies in a very biodiverse area.

Nature trails include over seven kilometres of wooden paths in lush vegetation. There are also various nature trails that offer a great opportunity to learn about rainforest life.

How to get to this national park and what are the main activities?

Find out in our detailed mini-guide to Ulu Temburong.

Discover the dazzling capital city

Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital and only major city, will enchant you with its monumental mosques, shopping malls, very clean streets and the beautiful riverfront along the Brunei River.

The main tourist attractions here include the Kampong Ayer water village with its stilt houses.

Beaches and swimming

Compared to neighbouring Malaysia or nearby Indonesia, Brunei may not be one of the top beach destinations, but even here you'll find beautiful and very peaceful places to relax by the South China Sea.

There are two main beach locations in Brunei:

  • Jerudong - a resort with a theme park and the most luxurious hotel in Brunei.
  • Muara - a quiet beach with a nice holiday park ideal for a combination of swimming and walks along the sea

Cruises not only on mangrove rivers

Outside the cities, Brunei is filled with dense tropical jungle with many waterways.

Discover the unique mangroves that abound along the local rivers and, if you're lucky, you'll also see the crocodiles that inhabit the local waters.

Mangrove river cruises are especially offered by FREME, Brunei's largest tourist agency.

Prices are around 80 bnd and tours need to be booked online via freme.com.

Take a break from busy Southeast Asia

Brunei is very different from other countries in Southeast Asia.

It is a very rich, clean and extremely peaceful country ideal for a 2-4 day break from the busy surrounding countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand or Singapore, from where Brunei is easily accessible by air.

Visit Brunei as part of a visa-run, for example, when your visa runs out in one of the surrounding countries and you need to renew it by travelling out and then returning to the country in a few days.
