Yarra River

The Yarra River meanders like a silver ribbon between the skyscrapers of Melbourne's city centre, making the bustling urban environment much more pleasant.
The two banks of the Yarra River are beautifully landscaped as pedestrian promenades with many restaurants and bars, offering great views of Melbourne's skyscraper-filled skyline.
The Yarra River is one of the symbols of the city and its embankments are one of the main tourist attractions.

Where are the best boardwalks?
Within Melbourne's Central Business District, head to these promenades along the Yarra River:
- Southbank Promenade (see map) - the busiest part of the waterfront, with plenty of restaurants and bars, and the famous Gas Brigades Fire Show in the western section.
- Flinders Walk (see map) - a narrow pedestrian promenade along Filnders Street station with several restaurants on the water
- South Wharf Promenade (see map) - a beautiful pedestrian promenade in the new part of Melbourne running alongside the Melbourne Exhibition Centre and featuring the historic Polly Woodside
As well as the promenades, the best views of the river are from Sandridge or Princes Bridge.
The historic Polly Woodside, located on the South Warf Quay, dates back to 1885 and is firmly anchored near the pedestrian walkway.
On the first Sunday of every month you can also visit the interior of the ship for a fee 16 aud and by booking on the official website.
River cruises
On the Southbank Promenade you will find several stalls of boat companies organising cruises on the River Yarra.
Most cruises are organised by Melbourne River Cruises, with hourly cruises costing around 20 aud.
You can book a cruise at melbcruises.com.au/yarra-river-cruises. For more detailed information, see What to do in Melbourne.
Hotels with river views
The best accommodation in Melbourne can be found right on the banks of the Yarra River. If you want a room with a view of the Yarra River and Melbourne's skyline, you'll typically need to pay extra for superior rooms on the higher floors.
