Kaneohe Sandbar

Kaneohe Sandbar

For a unique natural attraction, head to the picturesque Kaneohe Bay with its many small islands and coral reef rising almost above the surface.

Less than 500 metres from shore, a shallow shoal rises steeply from the depths of the sea, creating the largest saltwater sandbar in the world.

The cheapest accommodation on Oahu

The water here is so shallow that you can easily walk around an area the size of several football fields, take photos of the surrounding islands and mainland, or even play a game of volleyball at a stretched net - all within half a kilometre of the shore, separated by the depths of the coral sea.

At the edges of this large "sea sand" you can snorkel and watch schools of fish or turtles.

The height of the water varies according to the current tide, but the maximum will be waist-deep.

How to get there

The Kaneohe Sandbar is easily reached by one of the many cruise ships departing from the Kaneohe town dock.

Many companies offer different types of trips, from simple cruises back and forth to snorkeling trips. The cost of snorkeling trips starts at about 130 usd, departing from the dock north of Kanehoe (see location on map).

Free parking is available at the dock, and there is also a bus stop for bus line 60 from Honolulu right next to the dock.

Beachfront accommodation

Kaneohe Bay offers spectacular views and a very peaceful setting for spending relaxing days.

There are very few accommodations right in Kaneohe, however, the intimate hotel complex is one of the absolute highlights on Oahu Paradise Bay Resort with a beautiful oceanfront location just outside of town with access directly to the ocean.
