Whitley Bay is, in our opinion, the most beautiful beach and seaside resort in the Newcastle area.

Find a hotel with a sea view

Whitley Bay beach is covered in fine sand, which is comfortable not only for relaxing but also for long walks. The entire beach is over 3km long and has a beautiful pedestrian promenade running along it, ending at St. Mary's Lighthouse.

Beach facilities

The central part of the promenade is lined with several restaurants, cafés, patisseries and ice cream shops.

There are also free toilets right on the beach in a few places and umbrella and sun lounger hire is available in the summer season.

Spanish City Pavilion

In the middle of the beach promenade you can't help but notice the interesting pavilion with a dome called "Spanish City".

This palace was built in 1910, modelled on the larger pavilion on Blackpool's Pleasure Beach, originally as a concert hall.

Today, Spanish City serves several restaurants.

How to get there

The quickest way to get here from Newcastle city centre is to take the Yellow Line underground in around 25-30 minutes. Whitley Bay station is about 1km from the southern end of the beach.

There are several bus routes running along the beach:

  • 306 - runs from the beach to the nearest Whitley Bay tube station, on to Long Sands beach, Tynemouth Priory and Castle and on to the town centre, but the journey to the town centre by direct bus is considerably longer than by tube.
  • 308 and 309 - running from the beach to the nearest Whitley Bay tube station and north to Blyth. In the opposite direction to Newcastle city centre, but the journey to the city centre by direct bus is significantly longer than by tube

Hotels at Whitley Bay

The resort of Whitley Bay is the most popular place to stay if you want to live by the sea.

There are many restaurants, shops and general supermarkets here and Whitley Bay is also easily accessible by tube.

  • Premier Inn Whitley Bay **** - Hotel in the grounds of the Spanish City Pavilion overlooking the sea
  • The Royal Hotel *** - one of the cheapest hotels with sea views, located on the south end of the beach near the tube
  • Dunes Hotel ** - very cheap hotel by the underground station about 600 metres from the sea
