Take a trip to the mouth of the River Tyne in the North Sea and enjoy great walks along the coast, relaxing on the grassy plains and benches, and spectacular sea views.

What to see along the estuary?

  • Lighthouses on the quays protecting the boats entering the river from the waves
    • The stone lighthouse on the north pier at Tynemouth (not currently accessible)
    • The red wooden Herd Groyne lighthouse in South Shields (can be walked to)

  • Collingwood Monument
    • Admiral Collingwood Monument, built in 1845, offering the best views of the estuary

The biggest tourist attraction, however, is undoubtedly Tynemouth Priory and Castle standing on the headland north of the river near Tynemouth town centre.

Even the town of Tynemouth itself is a nice place to stop for lunch or a snack in one of the many local restaurants and cafes.
