Tynemouth Priory and Castle

One of the most important and, in our opinion, most beautiful historical monuments is located above the mouth of the Tyne River in the North Sea and offers magical views of the wide sea and the rugged coastline with its beaches.
The remains of a fortified Benedictine priory are complemented by the remains of WWII military batteries.
Soak up history among the ruins
The remains of the church, which served as a Benedictine priory, are located inside the walls and are thus completely separated from the surrounding modern world.
Take a stroll through the vast grassy area where, in addition to the church, you'll also find a historic cemetery, well-preserved walls and breathtaking views.
The monastery was probably founded in the 7th century on the site of what was once a Roman fortress.
The church, the remains of which you can admire today, dates from the mid-11th century and the walls were gradually added from the 14th to the 16th century.
Enjoy the sea views
As Tynemouth Priory and Castle stands on a headland, there are views in three directions from here.
You'll see the coastline with its beaches, the open sea and the lighthouses on the quays that protect the Tyne estuary from big waves.
Entrance fees and opening times
The castle and priory are open daily from 10am-5pm during the summer, or only until 4pm during the winter.
Admission prices are graduated according to the different days. If you buy tickets online at least 1 day in advance, you get a 15% discount.

How to get there
From Newcastle city centre, it's easy to get here on the Yellow Line tube in about 20-25 minutes. Enter at 'Tynemouth' station, from where you'll only have to walk about 350 metres to the castle.
There is a bus stop near the castle for bus lines 1 and 306, which leave from Newcastle city centre (but the journey time is considerably longer than the tube - about 45 minutes) and continue northwards along the coast and beaches.
