Long Sands Beach

Long Sands Beach

The most famous beach in the Newcastle area is called Long Sands and it is popular not only among swimming and sunbathing enthusiasts, but also among surfers.

Find a hotel with a sea view

Long Sands Beach lies between the towns of Tynemouth and Whitley Bay, below a cliff about 20 metres high and sand and grass dunes. This is why it is separated from the hustle and bustle of the streets and the city, but also very accessible.

Facilities on the beach

At the north and south ends of the beach you'll find a restaurant and bar, as well as free toilets and freshwater showers.

There are also sunbed and umbrella rentals in the summer season.

The south end of the beach is also home to several surf schools.

Tynemouth Aquarium

Off the main road above the beach, visit the small marine aquarium ideal for families.

The aquarium's biggest attractions are the tanks with sharks, seals or colourful tropical fish.

The aquarium is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00, with the last entry always one hour before closing time.

Prices are as follows:

  • Adults - 17,75 gbp
  • children up to 12 years old - 12,30 gbp
  • family admission (2 adults + 2 children) - 57,10 gbp

For up-to-date information, visit the official website at tynemouthaquarium.co.uk.

How to get there

The 306 bus service runs along the beach, taking you to places such as the neighbouring Whitley Bay beach or the nearest Tynemouth tube station (about 15 minutes walk), where you can change to the tube towards the centre.

The 306 bus itself also goes to Newcastle city centre, however the journey is longer than the tube.

Accommodation and beaches

If you want to stay close to the sea, we recommend a well rated hotel The Tynemouth Castle Inn **** located next to the aquarium right on the beach.

However, a slightly livelier area with a greater choice of restaurants is Whitley Bay beach, 2km away.
