It's easy to get around Gothenburg, wherever you stay. However, we have some useful tips for you, both on the locations themselves and on selected and verified hotels to stay in.
Where to stay in Gothenburg
You don't have to worry too much about locations. Practically speaking, in Gothenburg you will always stay in the centre. Occasionally, however, locations like Avenyn, which is a commercial avenue in the city centre, or Haga, Linné and Majorna are singled out. However, there are hardly any hotels or hostels in these locations.
Cheap and recommended hotels in Gothenburg
We can easily divide Gothenburg into inner and outer centre.
Inner city centre - Inom Vallgravem
The inner centre can be considered to be the area around Gothenburg Central Station C and the island of Inom Vallgraven, which is separated from the rest of the city by a small water channel.
In this area you will find over two dozen three- and four-star hotels with excellent ratings. Check out accommodation in central Gothenburg and prices.
We can recommend these hotels in particular:
- Hotel Vanilla *** (cheaper)
- Comfort Hotel City *** (cheaper)
- Comfort Hotel Göteborg **** (cheaper)
- Scandic Goteborg Central **** (great value for money)
- Scandic Europa **** (great value for money)
- Hotel Riverton **** (great waterfront location)
- Dorsia Hotel and Restaurant ***** (five-star hotel)
On weekdays you purchase a room for two people at an average of around 110 eur per night with breakfast. Weekend rates can be up to double that. It is therefore advisable to look for hotels in advance.
Outer city centre - Avenyn
The rest of Gothenburg's accommodation can be found south of the centre, mostly around the main Avenyn avenue. Where available, hotels here tend to be 18 eur 26 eur cheaper per night than in the centre itself - view hotel listings.
However, you will also find exclusive hotels, such as the five-star Upper House *****, which has a unique view of the whole city thanks to its restaurant on the 25th floor, where a rich buffet breakfast is served every morning.
Outside the centre
You can find hotel units outside the city centre and they don't have to be that far away. On the opposite bank of the river, for example, you'll find the excellent four-star Radisson Blu Riverside **** with its modern interior, spa and very tasty breakfast buffets. The advantage is that the atmosphere is as peaceful as possible, and the centre is a 3-minute ride away on the free ferry 286, which departs practically every 5 minutes.
Hostels in Gothenburg
If your budget is tight and Scandinavian prices don't do it for you, look for shared rooms in hostels. You'll pay 24 eur for a single bed at the following establishments:
Both are located on the south-western border of the city between The Hague and Slottsskogen Park. There is both a bus and tram stop nearby.
Hotel prices in Gothenburg
Hotels in Gothenburg are certainly among the more expensive, both compared to other European and Scandinavian cities. This is due to the relatively small number of hotels, with no more than a hundred in the entire city and surrounding area.
The usual price for a room and night for 2 people is around 128 eur on weekdays and 165 eur on weekends. Prices increase steeply as the check-in date approaches and in high season.
Hostels will offer a significantly cheaper alternative where beds in shared rooms cost 24 eur.
