What to do in Corvo

Caldeirao

How to have fun on the island of Corvo? Most tourists only head here for a day trip, but we would recommend staying here for 1 or 2 nights and enjoying the island to the fullest.

Hiking

Hiking is the main activity that can be done on Corvo, even over several days.

Most hikers head to the local main landmark - the giant volcanic crater Caldeirão.

The hike to Caldeirão is the longest hike on the island and will take you almost a full day if you walk and want to spend time walking the perimeter of the caldera as well.

  • 12 km in total (there and back together)
  • Approximately 5 hours
  • Route map

At the very top of the Monte Gordo volcano you have more hiking options. You can either hike here (see above) or drive with one of the local organizations behind 10 eur to 15 eur (see the Transportation section).

The most popular route goes from the edge of the caldera to the bottom of the caldera to the lakes, where you can do a small circuit.

  • 4.5 km in total
  • Approx. 1.5 hours
  • Route map

You can also go along the edge of the caldera and walk around it, but it is not possible to make a complete circuit because the western side of the caldera is inaccessible.

There is also a popular route from Vila do Corvo to the Miradouro Cara do Índio viewpoint (see map).

Are the routes signposted?

Yes, some routes are signposted (for example to Miradouro Cara do Índio or from the summit to the bottom of the caldera).

There is also a marked route from Vila do Corvo to Caldeirão, but it goes over quite difficult and not always passable terrain. We recommend taking a shortcut along the local farm road, see information in the Caldeirão site details.

Are there dangerous animals on Corvo?

No. Apart from birds, there are virtually no wild animals on Corvo.

On the way to Caldeirão you will encounter a large number of free-ranging cows, which are usually not behind a fence. However, cows are not dangerous to tourists.

Occasionally, you will also meet free-roaming dogs. This is especially common in Vila do Corvo. However, dogs are not stray and the pet culture in Portugal is of a high standard - so dogs are usually well behaved and looked after. They do not attack tourists in any way.

Beaches and swimming

You can swim in the sea on Corvo too, although the island doesn't appear to have convenient access to the sea at first glance due to the extreme cliffs.

However, at the western end of the local airport runway is the beautiful Praia da Areia, with its black sand and safe access to the water.

Discover Portugal's most remote village

For us personally, Corvo was a destination mainly because of its remoteness.

It is extremely interesting to discover life in the smallest and most remote village of Portugal, which makes up the entire island.

Take a walk around Vila do Corvo, get to know that the locals actually live quite ordinary lives during the day. Children go to a large modern school, adults work in ordinary jobs.

Vila do Corvo is quite a lively village during the day and you will always meet people in the centre. After the tourists leave the island in the afternoon, life on Corvo slows down.

Stroll the narrow streets of the center in the early evening, experiencing the magical views of the darkened ocean with a glimpse of the twinkling lighthouse on the neighboring island of Flores.

Finish the evening at the local BBC | Caffé & Lounge, which stays open until midnight.
