Weather in Corvo and best time to go

Caldeirao

The official definition of the climate on Corvo Island is a humid oceanic subtropical belt. However, the weather more often resembles more of a temperate belt with the only difference being that Corvo lacks the classic winter season.

In general, temperatures vary little across the year. They are highest in summer, when they rise to an average of 22 °C, and lowest in winter, when they hover around 14 °C.

The weather is very rainy and windy throughout the year. On average, measurable precipitation falls 240 days a year, but often it is just showers, with alternating rain and clear skies.

Thanks to the island's single dominant feature - the massive former volcano Caldeirão - the weather on Corvo can change very quickly.

In addition, the mountain retains clouds, and especially in winter, there can often be several days in a row when the summit will be shrouded in thick cloud and mist.

In contrast, the village of Vila do Corvo at the southernmost tip of the island often enjoys sunny weather.

Weather during the year

There are 4 seasons on Corvo, but winter tends to be very mild and merges with autumn or spring.

Winter weather

Normal winter temperatures are around 14-15°C and there are often cloudy skies, often for several days in a row.

There is a lot of rain in winter, usually in the form of intense, rapid showers, but these can occur several times a day.

While you can travel to the larger Azores islands during the winter, we do not recommend travelling to Corvo in winter. The chances of the local's only attraction, the Caldeirão volcano, being cloudless are quite slim in winter. And since Corvo is usually only visited for 1-2 days, the chances of nice views are further reduced by this.

Weather in spring

Spring weather is very changeable with lots of sunny but rainy days. However, showers are short in most cases and usually last no longer than 3 hours.

Temperatures during spring range between 16 °C and 19 °C.

Sunny weather prevails mainly in Vila do Corvo. On the volcanic caldera there is only about a 35% chance of clear weather during spring and the mountain is usually shrouded in clouds. However, the clouds are often thin and the views of the caldera can be nice even when the sky is clear.

Summer weather

Summer welcomes hikers with temperatures between 18 °C and 25 °C.

Between June and mid-September, the chances of sunny weather are best, at between 48% and 56%. The clouds rolling around the caldera are often illuminated by the sun and the views are often at their most beautiful during the summer.

Weather in autumn

Rain showers often alternate with clear skies during autumn. The caldera is often shrouded in clouds, but the views can still be breathtaking.

Normal autumn temperatures are around 15 °C to 19 °C.

When to go to Corvo

Corvo's pleasant temperatures make it a year-round destination.

However, most tourists head to the island for the majestic Caldeirão mountain, which is often shrouded in clouds.

Cloudy skies are significantly more common between November and February, so you're less likely to have nice views during the winter. However, this doesn't mean that you can't travel to Corvo in winter for nice views at all. The weather changes frequently and quickly and even in winter you can get some great views from the mountain.

The safest weather is from May to early October, when there is the least cloud cover and the least wind, and therefore the least chance of disruption to flights and cruises.

The How to get here chapter describes in more detail the chances of flights and cruises being cancelled due to weather.
