Shirakawa is a charming Japanese countryside where the famous gassho-zukuri farmhouses stand.

The whole village is rather like an open-air museum, some of the houses are up to 250 years old and the whole town is on the UNESCO list. The handmade straw roofs are heavily reinforced, as a lot of snow falls in winter. At this time of year, the village looks like a fairy tale, covered in high snow.

Most people stay in the farmhouse, where a fire burns in the middle of the room and traditional dishes are prepared.
