Shitennoji

Shitteno-ji Buddhist Temple is one of the oldest religious temples built by the state.

Although the individual buildings have been rebuilt many times over the centuries, the first temple on this site was built in 593 by Prince Shotoku.

The Shitennoji complex is not very large and a visit will take about 30 minutes.

You can enter all the outdoor areas as well as some of the buildings and gardens.

Entrance fees and opening hours

Shitenno-ji Temple is open every day from 9:30am-4:30pm.

Ticket prices are as follows:

  • 500 jpy - regular admission
  • 400 jpy - admission for holders of a full-day metro ticket
  • Free - admission with Osaka Amazing Pass

How to get there

The temple can be found in the southern part of the city centre, about 1 km from Tennoji Station and the Harukas 300 skyscraper.

You can walk here in about 15 minutes from the Shinsekai district or from Tennoji Zoo.

The nearest subway stations are:

  • Shitennōji-mae Yūhigaoka (approx. 350 metres)
  • Tennoji (approx. 750 metres)

Bus line 62 also passes by the temple.
