Getting around Siena

Il Campo

Siena is a small city, so there is no need to worry about moving around the city or to find out a lot of information beforehand.

On foot

The most efficient way to get around the city is on your own two feet. Wandering the narrow streets of the centre is, after all, one of the main activities you're heading to Siena for, so walking really is the best mode of transport.

Although the train station appears on the map to be a distance from the centre in both length and elevation, there's no need to worry. The biggest height difference is overcome by escalators, and the distance to the main square , Piazza del Campo, is only about 1.6km.

After exiting the escalator, take the main street Viale Vittorio Emanuele II to the left until you reach the walls and gates of Porta Camollia. Pass through this and you will find yourself in the historic centre, with the shortest way to the square being along the pedestrianised Via Camollia.

Public transport - buses

There are also public buses running around Siena, which will serve you well if you get really tired. They go even into the narrowest part of the historic centre to places you wouldn't expect them, usually in the form of smaller orange minibuses.

They're also handy for getting from the train station to the centre if you don't feel like walking.

When going to the centre, keep in mind that the bus stops are not directly in front of the station building. In fact, the only buses that stop there are those coming from the centre and continuing on to the suburbs of Siena. To get there from the station, follow the signs that will take you to the shopping centre.

This will take you to a series of long escalators that will take you to Viale Vittorio Emanuele II, where you will be heading towards the centre from the Antiporto Camollia stop (looking left from the escalators).

From the Antiporto Camollia stop you can reach the main bus station Via Tozzi near the city centre by the following lines: 0S1, 112, 130, 131, 136, 506, 513, 601, 706, S35, S36 and S37. Buses run on average about once every 10 minutes and there is no need to check the timetables.

In the direction from Via Tozzi bus station directly to the train station you can use lines 0S3, 0S9, S10, S30

From Piazza del Sale on the edge of the walls, lines 0S4, 0S7, 0S8, S17, S77.

Timetables can be found on the at-bus.it website under Serizi Urbani and Servizi Extraurbani.

Tickets

You can buy a ticket at any Tabacchi newsagents, which are literally on every corner, including the station. A ticket valid for 70 minutes costs 1,50 eur, All-day tickets are not sold.

The easiest way to pay the fare is with your own contactless card, which you attach to the validator when you board the bus.

Alternatively, you can purchase tickets via the AT Bus mobile app (Google Play / App Store).
