The name Teatro alla Scala can be translated into English as Theatre on the Steps.

Repertoire and tickets for performances

The prestige of Milan's La Scala rivals that of the world's best operas, such as the Vienna State Operaand the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

The most famous historical operas are performed at La Scala, supplemented continuously by current world premieres.

Some of the most popular operas in the repertoire include Don Giovanni, Rigoletto and Capulets and Montagues.

Opera performances are supplemented by ballet pieces and classical music concerts.

Tickets for the most popular shows tend to sell out months in advance, but you can usually get at least some tickets for lesser-known shows up to 14 days in advance. You can buy tickets online from the comfort of your home on the official website: teatroallascala.ticketone.it.

Ticket prices for La Scala

The very cheapest tickets for lesser-known operas or daytime concerts can be purchased from 30 eur.

Tickets for the more well-known shows in the main evening time around 20:00 can be purchased from 130 eur to 500 eur depending on seating.

La Scala building and interior

If you're not a child of fortune and can't get tickets for one of the many performances, go on a guided tour of the place. The 6 floors of boxes inlaid with gold and lined with crimson velvet are really worth it.

The richly decorated and monumental interior with its main hall is a stark contrast to the building's rather bland exterior. The auditorium can seat up to 2,800 spectators and is one of the largest in Europe.

The present theatre building was opened in 1778 and rebuilt in 1838 in pure classical style.

La Scala tour and museum

You can see the interiors of the theatre and the adjacent museum without attending a performance. It is open daily from 10:00-18:00.

Tickets cost 12 eur for a specific date or 15 eur open tickets for any date.
