Cimitero Monumentale

Although cemeteries are generally not among the most popular sights, Milan's largest Monumental Cemetery (Cimitero Monumentale) is definitely worth a visit. The entrance to the cemetery alone is more reminiscent of a cathedral than a regular entrance gate.
Majestic tombs and famous personalities
The new cemetery was opened in 1866 with the aim of consolidating several smaller and unmaintained cemeteries around the then city limits. The monumental structure of the main entrance was designed by architect Carlo Maciachini.
However, the entrance building is only the icing on the cake.
Just enter the grounds and you will find that, rather than a cemetery, the Cimitero Monumentale is an open-air architectural museum.
Over time, expensive tombs have been built here, often of significant artistic value, emulating famous monuments in Italy and around the world.
The cemetery is also the final resting place for many famous personalities.
How to get to the cemetery?
The Cimitero Monumentale is located on the northern edge of the centre near Porta Garibaldi station. It is easily accessible by metro line 5 to Monumentale station or by tram line 10.
