Formally, the area is made up of two squares: the Piazza del Duomo and the Piazza di San Giovanni, but in the vast majority of cases only the first name is used.

The most famous of the famous

As the name of the square suggests, the main landmark is the local Duomo, to which other buildings belong. Without exaggeration, the Piazza del Duomo can be described as one of the most beautiful and most visited squares in Europe. It is here that you will find monuments that the whole world knows.

The centre of the square is made up of a trio of buildings linked by an iconic Gothic-Renaissance architectural style and a magnificent façade of white, dark green and pink marble. Click on the title below for details of each monument.

On the eastern edge of the piazza, you will then visit one of Florence's famous museums, the Museo dell'Opera dell Duomo, exhibiting many original sculptures, paintings from the cathedral and baptistery.

The centre of Florence

The Piazza del Duomo has been the centre of Florence since around the 4th century, taking on its present form with the completion of the cathedral in the 15th century.

The main shopping street , Via Roma , connects Piazza del Duomo with another famous square , Piazza della Repubblica. Another main street is Via dei Calzaiuoli leading to Piazza della Signoria with the famous Palazzo Vecchio and Neptune's Fountain.
