The square has been the centre since antiquity, when it was the site of the Roman Forum. In the Middle Ages, markets were held in the square and it remains the centre of Florence's historic district to this day.

The Piazza della Repubblica is surrounded by several palaces, dominated by the Palazzo dell'Arcone di Piazza with its large archway facing Via Strozzi.
In the centre of the piazza is also the Column of Plenty, made of grey Elbian granite and dating from 1431.
