By train in Italy
Florence has great rail connections to the rest of Italy. You can reach all major Italian cities from the Alps to Sicily very frequently and comfortably.
Florence is on Italy's main high-speed line connecting Rome and Milan. There are no direct international trains to Florence.
For long-distance tickets (i.e. all trains marked as Inter City IC, Frecciargento, Frecciabianca, Frecciarossa), buy your tickets for the lowest price ideally online at least 3 weeks in advance at trenitalia.com or from the private carrier italotreno.it.
On the other hand, for regional services (R - Regionale or RV - Regionale Veloce) the ticket price is always the same until departure. You can also buy them online, but you can also buy them before departure at the ticket office or at a ticket machine.

By bus in Italy
While international bus services from Florence are not very frequent, domestic buses run to a large number of destinations around Italy.
Long-distance connections
There are several bus companies to Florence, but the journey to the vast majority of cities is always significantly slower and, more importantly, significantly less frequent than travelling by train. This can have the advantage of lower prices, but even this is by no means the rule.
The cheapest tickets are offered by Itabus, starting from about 5 eur on long-distance routes when bought online at least a month in advance at itabus.it. For this price you can buy tickets from Florence to Turin or Rome, for example. Shorter connections to Genoa and La Spezia start from 2 eur.
