Brunelleschi's monumental work
The original church was consecrated in 393. At the beginning of the 15th century, Giovanni of Bicci decided to build a new church on the site of the original Romanesque basilica.
Filippo Brunelleschi was commissioned as the architect and the building was not completed until after his death in 1459.
The Basilica of St Lawrence is considered a pioneering work of Renaissance architecture.
