Basilica di San Lorenzo is one of the largest and oldest Roman Catholic churches in the city.

The final resting place of Cosimo I. The last resting place of the Medici and his successors has come to the attention of the general public thanks to the works of the sculptor Donatello, who created many frescoes and sculptures here and whose body rests in peace here along with his patron and friend Cosimo I.

Brunelleschi's monumental work

The original church was consecrated in 393. At the beginning of the 15th century, Giovanni of Bicci decided to build a new church on the site of the original Romanesque basilica.

Filippo Brunelleschi was commissioned as the architect and the building was not completed until after his death in 1459.

The Basilica of St Lawrence is considered a pioneering work of Renaissance architecture.
