It was built in 1755 as a symbol of the unity of the city's residents. It collapsed in 1867 due to an earthquake, but was rebuilt in 1889 by the Dutch colonial administration.
The Tugu is 15 meters tall and white with beautiful gold ornaments. The name tugu was also adopted for the Yogyakarta railway station, located about 1 km to the south.

It takes about 20 minutes to walk here from Malioboro main street or the train station.
