Weather in Yogyakarta and best time to go

Borobudur

It is warm here all year round, but the average temperatures are slightly lower than in Jakarta and generally on the north coast of Java.

This makes exploring the city and surrounding sights much more pleasant than in other parts of Java.

Average daily temperatures soar to 31°C throughout the year. There is no cooler or warmer weather. At night it cools down to 20 to 24 °C.

The local rainy season lasts between December and March, while summer is relatively dry; July, August and September are the driest months of the year. September and August are the happiest months to visit in terms of lowest humidity.

Days here are on average 12.5 hours long, however, as the sun rises early (around 6am), it also gets dark early (around 6pm), which is something to be reckoned with, especially if you want to catch both important temples in one day and during daylight hours.

When to go to Yogyakarta

The best time is summer when it is dry, but Yogyakarta can be recommended all year round. However, if you're mainly heading for hiking, we don't recommend going during the rainy season when the trails are impassable.

If you're in the area during Yogyakarta's rainy season, don't dismiss a visit - it will still be worth it. Indoor activities are plentiful and the rains are rarely all day. It usually rains for a few hours in the afternoon or evening.

When is the dry season?

You'll enjoy the most pleasant weather with the least chance of rainfall from June to mid-October. Although heavy downpours can occur, they usually don't last more than an hour and on average occur only 6-7 days a month.

Humidity in the dry season drops to an average of 74%.

When are the heaviest rains?

The main period of violent tropical storms, which occur on average up to 17 days per month, begins in mid-December and ends in early April.

Mountain activities are impossible during this period, but visiting the sights is not hampered by the rain.
