Jakarta in a nutshell

Park around the Monas Monument

Jakarta, an Indonesian conurbation of 30 million located in the northwest of Java, is nicknamed, in the style of New York's Big Apple , "The Big Durian."

Some say it's because, like this controversial fruit, people either love it or hate it, but nothing in between. However, many travelers point out another similarity between Jakarta and the durian, the fact that they both stink.

Whichever is right, Jakarta is certainly worth a stop on your way to the more attractive regions of Indonesia.

You'll see classic Dutch colonial architecture, modern skyscrapers, as well as slums. It is these contrasts that perfectly portray the reality of life in a megacity.

Book a hotel in Jakarta in advance

To visit Jakarta's main attractions, 1 full day, or at least 2 nights, is enough. If you also want to visit the theme parks TMII or Ancol, reserve at least 2 full days.
