Getting around Komodo Islands

Komodo Island, Komodo Islands, Indonesia

As most of the Comoros islands are uninhabited, the transport offer around the islands is somewhat limited. You basically have two choices - take an organized cruise from Labuan Bajo or pay for a private water taxi.

Cruises

Organised cruises are undoubtedly the most popular way to visit most of the interesting places in the Comoros Islands. Due to the high competition among travel agencies in Labuan Bajo, cruises are a relatively affordable option even for backpackers. You can usually choose between day trips and multi-day cruises with a stay aboard the ship. These multi-day cruises are highly recommended, as they will take you to the more remote parts of the archipelago, as much of the day is taken up with transport.

Book a cruise in the Comoros Islands

You can get a three-day cruise on a simple boat with stops and excursions from as little as IRD 2,500,000. However, prices vary greatly depending on how luxurious the ship's amenities are. You can get everything from ships where you sleep with other passengers on mattresses on the deck of the ship, to luxury cabins and five-star menus and hot showers. But all cruises usually include overnight accommodation on the ship, full board for the duration of the cruise, entrance fees to Komodo National Park and all activities.

Cruises for divers are a separate chapter. These usually include more specific locations and head to more remote areas of the islands. The price for these diving cruises is considerably higher than those for tourists.

By private boat

Not exactly thrilled at the thought of sharing a boat with other passengers and being part of an organized expedition? Then you're left with only one option - renting a private boat that will take you to exactly the places you dream of. Boats for hire can be found at individual travel agencies or at the port in Labuan Bajo.

Expect that renting a boat for a day will cost at least IRD 2000000, but the price can be much higher in high season.
