Jakarta is the main gateway to Indonesia and although it is not a tourist city, many tourists spend at least 1 night here.
Read our tips on specific hotels, the best neighbourhoods to stay in and the approximate prices of hotels in Jakarta.
Where to book accommodation
The city offers a really wide range of all types of accommodation from extremely cheap tourist hostels to luxury hotels. With a bit of luck and early booking, it is the luxury 5* hotels in Jakarta that offer great deals compared to other world capitals.
In Southeast Asia, the traditionally strong agoda. com portal also offers the most accommodation in Jakarta. Particularly when it comes to budget hotels and guesthouses, you will find by far the most facilities on Agoda.
On the other hand, for larger and more luxurious hotels, booking through booking.com tends to be more profitable.
In general, however, even for smaller hotels, it cannot be said that Agoda is always better. It is always worth comparing the two main portals.
Best neighbourhoods in Jakarta and tips for hotels
Due to the very frequent traffic jams, it is best to stay as central as possible and only take the long route to/from the airport if possible.
The modern Thamrin centre
The area around one of Thamrin's main streets is ideal if you want a hotel close to the train station to/from the airport, while living in a visually nice modern neighbourhood.
- All Seasons Jakarta Thamrin *** - A quality yet cheap hotel 100 metres from BNI City/Sudirman station
- Shangri-La Jakarta ***** - one of the best hotels in Jakarta about 200 meters from BNI City/Sudirman station
- Hotel Indonesia Kempinski Jakarta ***** - one of the best hotels in Jakarta is directly connected to the Grand Mall
- Mandarin Oriental Jakarta ***** - a highly rated luxury hotel that often accommodates even state visitors from other countries
Kota Tua Old Town
Old Jakarta may be a small district, but it is much quieter than the city centre and can therefore be a great place to stay.
When travelling by taxi, Kota Tua is also close to the international airport.
There is only one major international hotel in Kota Tua:
Near the station, you can stay in two well rated hostels with prices starting from 15 usd per night.
Gambir and surroundings
The area around Gambir Station is great if you are continuing on from Jakarta by train. In addition, it is the area around Gambir Station that contains most of the sights such as the Istiqlal Mosque, the Cathedral or the Monas Monument.
Unfortunately, there are not many hotels in the immediate vicinity of Gambir.
- Hotel Borobudur Jakarta ***** - luxury hotel with gardens in a quiet location about 300 meters from the station
- Amaris Hotel Juanda ** - cheap well rated hotel near Juanda train station about 600 metres from Gambir station
Monas/Thamrin
The area south of the Monas Monument and north of the most modern part of the Thamrin Street area is known for the highest concentration of hotels.
However, there is no metro (will be from 2028) or commuter rail station directly in this area yet.
However, the Monas Monument is a 15-20 minute walk away and there are plenty of restaurants and shops in the area.
- Morissey Hotel Residences **** - one of the highest rated hotels in the area
- Ashley Tang Menteng Jakarta **** - a well-reviewed hotel with good rates located near the main street of Thamrin
On the other hand, from our experience we would not recommend the Ibis Arcadia hotel with very old facilities and dirty rooms.
Hotel prices in Jakarta
You can get the cheapest 2-bed room in a hostel with shared bathroom from about 9 eur per night.
Quite cheap are the usual 3* hotels with prices between 29 eur and 44 eur per night, and relatively good prices are also offered by 4* hotels, which you can usually get 99 eur per night.
The most luxurious 5* hotels bear comparison with other Asian destinations, and expect prices between 202 eur and 257 eur per night.
Jakarta is not a tourist city and therefore prices are at a similar level throughout the year regardless of the season.
