Cairo is easily accessible from abroad by air, but due to the lack of a large number of low-cost airlines, ticket prices are relatively high. From Egyptian destinations, Cairo can also be reached by train or bus.

By air to Cairo

There are currently 2 international airports in Cairo, with flights mainly from Europe, the Arab world, Africa and Asia.

Often, cheaper tickets from the Arab world or even Italy or France can also be purchased to an airport 250 km away Alexandria Borg el-Arab HBE. Meanwhile, Alexandria to Cairo can be easily reached by a relatively frequent and comfortable rail connection.

The cheapest tickets are usually offered by Aegean Airlines, Vueling or Air Arabia. Egyptair has its main base at Cairo International Airport.

Domestic flights

Visitors to Egypt's resorts often head to Cairo. In addition to organised trips with tour operators, you can also take advantage of Egyptair's domestic connections. Return tickets from Hurghada or Sharm el-Sheikh cost well with luggage around 120 usd to 150 usd.

By train to Cairo

By rail you can reach all the major Egyptian cities on the Nile River and in the Nile Delta. Trains don't go to the Red Sea resorts, but you can use them especially to cities like Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan and Port Said.

Egyptian trains are divided into several classes, with even 2nd class AC (with air conditioning) standing up well to the standard Western trains.

In Cairo, you'll use the single main station where all long-distance trains depart. It is called Ramses Station (google.com/maps) and is located at the junction of metro lines 1 and 2 (Al Shohadaa station).

The official Egyptian Railways website can be found at: enr.gov.eg. Tickets can always be bought online 2 weeks in advance, but only for 1st or 2nd air-conditioned class and only on the main routes. Online sales always close 2 days before departure.

Alternatively, tickets can be bought at the station ticket office without any problems, preferably 1-2 days in advance.

By bus to Cairo

Long-distance bus services also operate in Egypt. Modern buses, which playfully meet Western standards, are operated by the private company Go Bus Egypt. Tickets can be purchased online at go-bus.com to all major Egyptian destinations.

Prices tend to be slightly lower than the train and the ride comfort is comparable due to the modern air-conditioned buses. On the other hand, journey times on routes where the train also runs are longer.

In Cairo, these buses stop under the motorway junction on the northern edge of Tahrir Square (google.com/maps).
