Borg El Arab Airport has served Egypt's second largest conurbation, Alexandria, since 2009, when it replaced the under-capacity El Nouzha Airport in the city centre. It no longer operates.
Alexandria's current airport is modern and has plenty of room for future development, but the disadvantage is its distance from the city centre, which is 50 km.
Scheduled flights from Alexandria go mainly to major airports in the Middle East and North Africa. The cheapest flights to Europe can be purchased with Air Arabia, for example on the route to Bergamo, Italy.
