The capital of the Sultanate of Brunei is simply called Bandar by the locals. It lies in the middle of the Saiffudina coastal plain, at the mouth of the Sungai Brunei River into Brunei Bay. It became the capital in 1405. The biggest landmark is the gold-domed Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque (named after the 28th Sultan, who is credited as the architect of modern Brunei), but perhaps nicer is the new Kiarong Mosque.
