The modern and extremely popular district was built on the site of the old docks and old harbour west of Southern Cross main station.

Walk the waterfront

Docklands is a great place to stroll along the waterfront along the harbour and relax on benches or in the many restaurants with outdoor seating.

Pedestrian promenades run the length of the inner harbour. While the southern part in the centre of Docklands is mainly lively during the day because of the many offices, the northern part in the newer Newquay district is lively during the evening.

In the northern part of Newquay, treat yourself to one of the best views of the skyline of Melbourne's CBD (Central Business District) with its many skyscrapers.

Marvel Stadium

One of the most striking buildings in the Docklands is the huge Marvel Stadium located between the harbour and Southern Cross Station.

The multi-purpose stadium is mainly used for Australian rules football and even houses the AFL headquarters. With a capacity of over 56,000 spectators, it is the 5th largest stadium in Australia.

Docklands is a very accessible neighbourhood.

At its eastern end behind Marvel Stadium is Southern Cross Central Station, where most of the city's trains, long-distance trains and buses cross, as well as Skybus buses to both Melbourne Airport and Avalon.

The Dockladns centre is directly accessible by tram:

  • Lines 11, 48 (Bourke St.) - South Centre
  • Lines 35, 70, 86 (Waterfront City) - North Centre (Newquay)
  • Lines 30, 35, 70, 86 - east side around Marvel Stadium
