Loch Ard Gorge

Loch-Ard is a popular spot about 5 minutes drive west of the Twelve Apostles.
The rugged coastline, full of small coves and golden limestone islands and rocks, beckons visitors with breathtaking views.
Loch Ard Shipwreck Site
The bay is named after the clipper (fast sailing ship) Loch Ard, a Scottish ship that was wrecked here at the end of its 3-month voyage from England to Melbourne in June 1878.
Of the 54 people on board, only two survived. The historic cemetery for the victims of this tragedy can still be found at the top of the cliff.
Bays and bird islands
There are several sightseeing spots in the Loch-Ard area.
At the main car park you will see the bay of Loch Ard itself, and about 400 metres to the east you will get a view of the 12 Apostles rock formations from the other side than the main viewpoint.
Conversely, about 500 metres to the east is a view of the largest of the rock formations - Mutton Bird Island.
This 50 metre high and 200 metre long island is a popular breeding ground for many species of birds.
How to get there
There is a free car park right by Loch-Ard, which is only 200 metres from the main Great Ocean Road.
The town of Port Campbell is about 10 minutes' drive away.

The V/Line bus service also stops at the bay, connecting Warrnambool - Port Campbell - Apollo Bay.
The bus only runs 3 times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, but always stops at the bay for 15 minutes. In this time you can easily walk to the viewpoint and back.
