Tirana in a nutshell

Tirana

Albania's capital and by far its largest city is practically the only real centre of the country and, thanks to its international airport, a frequent destination for many tourists heading to Albania.

Tirana is not a historic city, it grew from practically nothing until the 19th century, when its great geographical location right in the middle of the country came into full effect.

To this day, Tirana is a very dynamic city. New high-rise buildings are springing up on every corner and new residential areas are springing up around the outskirts of Tirana.

As already outlined, Tirana will certainly not impress with its many monuments, but it does offer a very pleasant atmosphere of shady streets densely planted with trees and literally dotted with cafes, restaurants, bakeries and bars.

You can also take a cable car up into the mountains above the city and, thanks to its important transport hub, Tirana also makes a great base for exploring Albania if you only travel by bus.

Tirana has a population of around 600,000 inhabitants.
