Krujë was the centre of resistance during the 15th century Turkish campaign led by the national hero Skanderbeg. It is still one of the most important historical sites in Albania and one of the most visited tourist destinations after the coastal resorts and Tirana.
Krujë Castle
The dominant feature of the city is the Krujë Castle and Fortress, which has played a significant role in Albanian history many times.
The fortress was built as early as the 6th century, but saw its glory days during the 15th century, when the Turks tried unsuccessfully to conquer Krujë several times.
Inside the fortress you will find a large museum of the national hero Skanderbeg, a smaller ethnographic museum and very well-preserved parts of the castle.
What to see inside the castle?
The Kruja Fortress includes several important buildings:
- Dollma Tekke Monastery - a beautifully preserved 18th century monastery built by the Bektashi family, combining elements of Christianity and Islam.
- Turkish Hamam - a traditional Turkish bath
- Watchtower - an ancient and well-preserved watchtower
- Skanderbeg Museum - one of the most important museums in the whole country dedicated to the national hero Skanderbeg
