Getting from Taipei Airport

Taipei

Taiwan Taoyuan Airport is connected to the Taipei Metro network and many bus routes.

Public transport can be used to reach several places in Taipei, the nearest high-speed rail station in Taoyuan, and buses also run to the city centres of Taichung, Taoyuan and Hsinchu without transfers.

If you will be staying in Taiwan for more than 1 day and plan to travel by public transport, be sure to buy an "EasyCard" transport card.

EasyCard - price and where to buy

EasyCard can be used in all cities in Taiwan for public and regional transport. The card can also be used to pay at some supermarkets or 7-Eleven or FamilyMart mini-markets.

Official website: easycard.com.tw.

How does EasyCard work? The card works on the basis of credit, which you load onto the card in any amount when you make a purchase and can be reloaded at any time at many locations.

When travelling on the metro or buses, all you have to do is hold the card up to a reader or turnstile and the appropriate fare amount is automatically deducted. So you don't always have to search for cash and see if you can pay by card (you usually can't).

The card costs 100 TWD, but this is just a deposit that you will get back if you return the card when you leave Taiwan. When you buy the card you must top up a certain amount of money at once, to get started we recommend 300 twd to 500 twd.

At all metro stations you will also encounter machines selling the "TPASS" card which is however mainly for regular commuters and is only issued in a 1 month version.

Sales points at the airport

The EasyCard can be purchased at many locations in both terminals.

  • Cash desk at the metro station - cash and credit card payment
  • Vending machines at bus and metro stops - cash only
  • Minimarkets FamilyMart and 7-Eleven - cash and credit card payment

Do not buy EasyCard at the Klook agency counter, which adds a sales fee of 100 twd.

Transportation to Taipei

Most services run to the capital, where you can use the metro, buses and taxis.

Metro Airport Line

The two terminals are connected to the main train station in downtown Taipei by the metro line Airport Line, which runs two different types of trains.

The subway to the airport is operated by Taoyuan Metro. Official information, current prices and exact timetables can be found on the website: tymetro.com.tw.

Fares

Fares are the same when using a single token and EasyCard and are calculated according to the distance travelled.

When transferring from the airport metro line to other metro lines within Taipei, you always have to go through the turnstile again and pay a new fare.

Prices are the same for both Commuter and Express trains.

  • Taipei Main Station (transfer to long-distance trains and the Taipei Metro Blue + Red Line) - 160 TWD
  • Sanchong (transfer to the yellow line of the Taipei Metro) - 140 TWD

You can purchase a one-time token at the vending machine before entering the station or at the ticket office. You can only pay by credit card at the ticket office. The machines only accept cash.

The token is attached to the reader at the turnstile when entering and leaving the station. You must therefore keep the token for the entire journey!

Buses

Buses are a slightly cheaper alternative to the metro and offer direct services to multiple destinations within the city.

However, after the metro opened in 2017, the intervals of bus routes were significantly extended.

Bus stands are located in the basement of both terminals (follow the clear signage).

Tickets for each line are purchased at a separate counter, and each route also has its own departure point.

Information, including detailed timetables, is clear and easy to understand and staff speak at least basic English. Tickets can also be bought from vending machines, but cash only.

There are also EasyCard machines at bus stops, which you can use to pay for tickets on all airport-bound services.
