The main means of transport on the entire island of El Hierro is the car. However, if you plan to walk around the island mainly on foot, bus lines can also serve quite well, but only for the eastern half of the island without the mountainous areas.

Hire a car
All car rental companies operating on El Hierro are located right in the arrivals terminal.
You'll find a branch of Cicar or Top Car rental companies here.
Other well-known multinational rental companies Avis, Budget and others are based in town, but if you book a car in advance, which is much more convenient, a member of staff will be waiting for you on arrival and will hand over your car directly at the airport.
When returning a car from a rental company that doesn't have a branch at the airport, you usually just park the car in front of the terminal, leave the keys in it and walk away.
The price for a weekly rental in high season starts at around 170 eur.
We recommend booking your car at least 2 months in advance. Local car rental companies have limited capacity and may sell out completely.
Usually the most favourable conditions are offered by local car rental companies Cicar and TopCar, which do not appear in search engines and you have to book directly on their website:
You can already compare other rental companies through well-known search engines such as booking.com:
Public transport - buses
Public transport buses stop right outside the terminal and connect to all scheduled arrivals and departures.
The bus usually leaves the airport about 30-40 minutes after arrival. In the other direction, the bus usually arrives at the airport 45-50 minutes before departure, which is plenty of time.
The airport is only served by line 10 from the largest town on the island , Valverde, where you can change to many other lines to all the communities on El Hierro.
Fares are purchased from the driver and can be paid by card or cash and there is always a flat rate for any distance - 1,35 eur.
- Travel time to Valverde - 15 to 20 minutes
- Frequency - 6-7 times a day according to the current flight schedule

Taxi
Regular taxis also work well on El Hierro. There are always a few cars waiting outside the terminal when each regular service arrives, and if you happen to be delayed and there are no taxis outside the terminal, there are phone numbers for the nearest company on the sign.
A taxi on call will usually arrive within 35 minutes.
Prices are strictly based on the meter and you can always pay by card or cash.
Approximate prices are as follows:
- Valverde - 16 eur
- Las Playas - 28 eur
- La Frontera/Tigaday - 41 eur
- La Restinga - 63 eur
Prices on weekends and public holidays are approximately 15% higher.
Mobile apps like Bolt or Uber don't work in El Hierro.
