Hotel or homestay?
Sapa is very specific for its high concentration of accommodation with local families in so-called homestays. So you may be faced with the decision whether to stay in a traditional hotel/guesthouse or whether to try authentic accommodation.
It should be noted in advance that most homestays are not located in Sapa itself, but in ethnic villages around the town. Transport to them can be a bit complicated, so they are not a very good base for exploring the whole area.
On the other hand, they are perfect as accommodation while trekking through the local villages or if you want to take a break from the city bustle. But read reviews carefully when choosing a family homestay. Many Vietnamese families name their guesthouses as homestays, even though they have several dozen rooms and don't have time to attend to individual guests personally.
So for us, the ideal option is to stay for one or two nights in Sapa in a classic hotel, supplemented by a short overnight stay with locals on one of the treks.
