Trafalgar Square

Trafalgar Square

Trafalgar Square is meant to commemorate the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 and is considered the true centre of London.

It is in Trafalgar Square that all the major demonstrations take place, it is the site of the main Christmas tree and the most exuberant New Year's Eve celebrations from across London.

The northern part of the square acts as a pedestrian zone and meeting point in front of the monumental National Gallery building.

Nelson's Column

The entire square is dedicated to the memory of the naval battle of Spanish Trafalgar, in which Britain was victorious in the last battle of the sailing ships against the Franco-Spanish fleet. This confirmed Britain's absolute naval supremacy over the world for more than a century.

The battle was led by Admiral Horatio Nelson, who, although he died during the fighting, became a British national hero to this day.

The square is therefore dominated by the granite Nelson Column, 56 metres high, from which the admiral's statue looks south-west towards his fleet at sea.

The column is surrounded by two fountains and four large bronze statues of lions defending the square. It is said that the metal used to make the statues came from the works of French ships.
