Oxford Street

Christmas Oxford Street

London's Oxford Street is one of the most important thoroughfares in the central London Borough of Westminster and is one of the world's most famous shopping streets.

Oxford Street is especially enjoyed by lovers of clothes, fashion and accessories. Beautifully decorated in the run-up to Christmas, the street is one of the busiest places in London.

Book your central London hotel in advance

Oxford Street runs through central London from east to west and measures nearly 2 kilometres. In the east it ends at Soho Square and continues towards Holborn as New Oxford Street, while its western end is at Marble Arch on the edge of Hyde Park.

Shopping frenzy

Oxford Street is a mecca for all shopaholics. Along its length you'll come across hundreds of shops, boutiques and large and famous department stores.

Fashion lovers in particular will be in for a treat, but clothing and shoe shops are interspersed with dozens of mini-markets selling souvenirs as well as regular supermarkets selling groceries.

There are several famous and large shopping centres on Oxford Street.

Selfridges

This chain of high-end luxury department stores has its main branch right on Oxford Street and is the second largest in the whole of Britain after Harrods. Visit this monumental building and browse several floors of the most luxurious clothing and fashion brands.

Of course, count on the fact that the cheapest items here start in the hundreds of pounds.

John Lewis

The second largest department store on Oxford Street is called the John Lewis Partnership and offers a wide range of goods from several floors of fashion to furniture, sports and electronics.

Unlike Selfridges, you'll also find mid-range goods here and you don't have to spend hundreds or thousands of pounds straight away.

Marks & Spencer Store

Lovers of this classic mid-range British clothing brand with often great bargains will be delighted by the huge Marks & Spencer department store with over 15,000sq ft of retail space, located directly opposite Selfridges.

Primark

On the opposite pole to Selfridges is the discount fashion chain Primark, which can sell goods at truly symbolic prices. There are two Primark stores on Oxford Street, one at the east end and one at the west end.

However, Oxford Street is lined with many other world-class stores and if you really love shopping, you can spend more than one day here.

Accommodation on Oxford Street

If you're heading to London directly for shopping, staying in a hotel near Oxford Street will certainly come in handy. The only hotel you can stay at directly on this street is the Radisson Blu Edwardian Berkshire Hotel ****.

Cheaper hotels for around £4,000 can be found in close proximity to Oxford Street with a walking distance of up to 3 minutes. The most popular hotels in the area are certainly The Z Hotel Tottenham Court Road.

How to get to Oxford Street?

The Red Line of the Central tube runs under the entire street. You can use the Marble Arch, Bond Street, Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road stations.

In addition, there are Victoria and Bakerloo lines at Oxford Circus, a Jubliee line at Bond Street and a Northern line at Tottenham Court Road.

Oxford Street is also served by a number of bus routes. Lines 98 and 390 run across the street.
