On the southern outskirts of Fuengirola, the medieval defensive castle of Sohail rises on a small hill above the sea and is one of Fuengirola's main sights and tourist attractions.
The castle was built as a defensive fortress to strengthen the coastal defences of the then Emirate of Córdoba. It was built in 956 AD by the Emir Abd ar-Rahman III. Castillo Sohail is one of the best-preserved monuments from this period on the Costa del Sol.
The castle is easily reached on foot along the coastal promenade.
Sohail is open weekdays from 10:00-14:00, plus 15:30-18:00 on weekends. It is closed on Mondays. Entrance is free.
