La Línea de la Concepción

La Línea de la Concepción

Although the town of La Línea de la Concepción (usually called La Línea for short) is no longer officially part of the Costa del Sol, in reality it logically encloses the area and is the end point for many tourists travelling along the coast.

Book a hotel near the border with Gibraltar

La Línea, as the name suggests, forms a border town between Spain and British Gibraltar, with which it has significant economic and tourist links.

The town of La Línea itself does not offer many tourist attractions. It does have a long beach, but it is almost devoid of amenities and there is no historical centre or monuments to be found here. It is, however, an absolutely ideal starting point for trips to Gibraltar. The border crossing with Gibraltar Airport is right in town and with significantly lower prices for accommodation, as well as restaurants and supermarkets, La Línea is often the main place to stay when in Gibraltar.

Accommodation

There are a really large number of mainly smaller hotels and apartments available in La Línea, with prices more than double what you would pay if you were staying directly in Gibraltar.

The cheapest accommodation starts from as little as 26 eur per night in a 2 bed room in high season. Personally, we slept in a very basic little hotel called La Esteponera, but it was perfectly adequate for an overnight stay. Of the better 4* hotels then the Ohtels Campo de Gibraltar is absolutely ideal with all the amenities and prices from about 70 eur per night.

Transportation

Avanza buses run from the Costa del Sol to La Línea. For long-distance services to Estepona, Marbella, Málaga or Fuengirola, ideally buy tickets online via booking.avanza.com. On the Costa del Sol route, buses from La Línea run about 4-6 times a day and the journey to Málaga, for example, takes 2.5 hours and costs around 14 eur.

Local connections to the smaller resorts between La Línea and Estepona are provided by the local M240 bus line.

Long-distance services to Seville or Madrid, for example, are provided by the Alsa bus company, buy tickets at alsa.es.

The nearest big city, Algeciras, is reached every half hour by bus line M-120.
