Serra do Pilar Monastery

Serra do Pilar

The main landmark of Vila Nova de Gaia, which is effectively just a suburb of Porto on the other bank, is undoubtedly the former convent of Serra do Pilar, which stands on a high cliff above the Douro River.

Hotels with the best views of Porto

From the terrace in front of the monastery's walls, the best views are of the Douro River, Porto and the Luís I Bridge; this is where most of the postcard photographs are taken.

The Mannerist landmark of Porto

The Augustinian Order began building one of its largest Portuguese mansions in 1527, and it was not fully completed until 1672. Due to its strategic location, the monastery was fortified and often used by military garrisons.

The monastery ceased to serve its original purpose in 1910, but was completely reconstructed during the 20th century and declared a national monument.

Architecturally, the monastery bears Renaissance features with a strong influence of the Mannerist style.

The main landmark of the monastery and the entire left bank of the Douro River is the circular church, which reaches a height of 36 metres.

The most beautiful viewpoint in Porto

Thanks to its position on a high cliff and its straight walls open to the public, the area below the church is also the best viewpoint of Porto.

You'll have the Luís I Bridge, Porto's main landmark, in the palm of your hand, and you'll see the whole centre of Porto and the Douro River with its mouth to the Atlantic Ocean.

Entrance fees and opening hours

The monastery and church are open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00-18:30. The church is closed on Mondays.

The ticket price is 2 eur.

The Porto viewpoint is a public space and therefore admission is free 24 hours a day.

Transport to Serra do Pilar

It is very easy to reach the monastery and the viewpoint from Porto on foot via the Luís I bridge.

Right by the monastery, there is also the "Jardim de Morro" stop of the yellow line D rapid transit tram and the cable car that takes you down to the banks of the Douro River.

Luxury accommodation with city views

Just below the walls of the monastery lies the luxurious 4* Hotel Vincci Ponte de Ferro, which offers without doubt the most beautiful views of Porto, the bridge and the Douro River. Prices are high, but if it's atmosphere you're after, you'll be hard pressed to find better accommodation.
