One of the oldest monuments in Porto is the Roman Catholic cathedral on a hill overlooking the Douro River. The first Romanesque building on the site was built in 1147 and, despite the Gothic elements, was completed in Baroque style almost 600 years later in 1737.
The cathedral is the main Catholic church in Porto and is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
Architecture and form
The cathedral is not one of the largest in Portugal, but it impresses with its typically Portuguese architecture with a combination of white and black or grey.
The exterior is dominated by the Gothic style, while the interior is a mix of austere Romanesque and Gothic styles and a very ornate Baroque altar.
Admission and opening hours
The church is open to the public daily from 9:00 to 18:30.
A ticket to the cathedral costs 3 eur and includes entry to the tower.
