Weather in Oporto and best time to go

Porto Bridge

Porto is located in a humid oceanic climate with minor fluctuations between summer and winter. Thanks to the Atlantic Ocean, Porto is rarely sweltering hot, but the temperature rarely drops below 10°C.

Northern Portugal is considerably rainier in winter than the southern part of the country, so be sure to pack an umbrella during the winter months. On the other hand, summer is almost always beautiful with pleasant temperatures of around 24-25°C.

Porto during the year

What are the temperatures throughout the year, when is it rainiest and when is it sunniest?

Weather in January

January is one of the months with the most cloudy skies, which can cause frequent rainfall that can last up to half a day. On the other hand, longer lasting precipitation is rare as the weather is windy and blows the clouds away from the city.

Normal January temperatures in Porto are around 13 °C.

Weather in February

February ranks as a moderately rainy month. It rarely rains every day, with heavier showers occurring about every 4th day, interspersed with pleasant partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 12 and 15 °C.

There is often a strong wind blowing in from the sea, but it will break in the winding and hilly streets of the centre and will not affect movement around the city.

Weather in March

March sees the slow onset of spring, with temperatures rising to 17°C. Rainfall is fairly frequent and rain gear is certainly useful, but it tends to be brief and in between the sun shines more often in clear skies.

The first half of March is the peak flowering season for the almond trees, which are grown in abundance in the Douro Valley in the immediate vicinity of Porto.

Weather in April

April weather is similar to that of central Europe. Showers with very windy weather are replaced by clear and calm skies. Only the temperatures are much more stable, ranging between 16 and 18 °C throughout the month.

The parks and street trees are lush green and there is a fresh spring air in the air.

The weather in May

The weather in May boasts temperatures of around 20 °C and Porto is still sprinkled with regular rainfall, but it rarely lasts more than an hour.

Everything is lush green and in bloom, and for a classic Euro-weekend, May is absolutely perfect.

The weather in June

June marks the start of summer, but in Portugal's temperate north this means maximum average temperatures of around 25°C and only rare extreme fluctuations.

During June, rainfall decreases very noticeably and becomes rare.

Although the weather outside and the sunshine may tempt you to swim in the ocean, be aware that the water temperature does not exceed 18 °C.

Weather in July

July temperatures often climb to 26°C, but rarely exceed 32°C, and when they do, the constant breeze from the ocean makes the temperature feel more comfortable.

There is very little rain and almost exclusively short showers.

The temperature of the water in the sea barely reaches 19 °C.

Weather in August

According to statistics, August is the hottest month of the year, with temperatures of up to 26 °C, and occasionally over 30 °C. However, the weather is pleasant, with a constant pleasant breeze from the Atlantic, clear to partly cloudy skies, and rain is a rarity.

Even during August, the water temperature in the Atlantic does not exceed 19 °C.

Weather in September

September is still one of the great summer months, with pleasant temperatures between 22 and 25 °C and only sporadic short showers.

The air is clear and bright, as are the skies. The ocean water is a constant 19°C...

Weather in October

Autumn comes on slowly with average temperatures around 20 °C. Showers are frequent, occurring every other day, but usually lasting no more than an hour, with sunshine in between.

Ironically, it is only in October that the ocean water is warmest. Even then, it doesn't exceed 20 °C.

The end of October and the beginning of November is the best time for trips along the Douro River. The vineyards, olive and apple groves are bathed in the golden, red and brown colours of autumn and travelling through the countryside around Porto will be an unforgettable experience.

Weather in November

November is one of the rainiest months of the year. Often it rains every day, but less often it rains all day long. Most of the time, however, showers are interspersed with partly cloudy skies and do not affect urban tourism in any major way.

Normal daytime temperatures rise to 17 °C.

Weather in December

During December, the days get noticeably shorter, darkness comes early, but on the other hand, the period of romantically lit winding streets of the historic centre gets longer.

Rain is frequent, but periods of sunny weather between showers are also common, so don't be afraid of urban hiking during this month. Air temperatures hover around 14°C.

When to go to Oporto

From the previous lines, the best time to visit is definitely summer. You almost certainly won't get wet, you'll warm up, but the pleasant ocean breeze won't let you overheat. Remember, however, that even in summer the water in the Atlantic is cold, with a maximum temperature of 19°C.

It rains relatively often in the winter, but a little rain won't prevent weekend city breaks.

The best time to visit the vineyards of the Douro Valley is between September and early November, when the hills are coloured with the beautiful golden colours of autumn and the harvest begins. The quiet valley is transformed into a lively area full of people, farming equipment and boats bringing grapes down the river to Porto.

If you prefer a quieter season, go in spring or summer.

If you're heading to Porto purely for urban tourism, it doesn't really matter what time of year you go.
