The monumental building and former residence of the bishops of Porto, built at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, is currently open to the public on a limited basis.
Architecture and history
The first bishop's palace on this site was built during the 12th century, but the building in its present form dates back to the 18th century. However, construction was not fully completed until 1910.
The façade is in the typical Portuguese Baroque style with white walls and columns or window frames of dark granite. The window frames in particular are worth special attention, as they are beautifully decorated in the Rococo style.
The interiors are also beautiful, with many frescoes and typical Portuguese azulejos - blue and white painted tiles.
Admission and opening hours
The palace is open to the public daily from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm, except Sundays when it is closed.
Admission is 6 eur and includes entry to the neighbouring cathedral.
