The second largest town on the island is called Lajes das Flores, located on the southern coast.
Prices and availability of accommodation on Flores
If you're staying on the western half of the island, you'll probably visit Lajes at least once, as it's the tourist and shopping centre of this part of Flores. You'll find a full-service supermarket, post office, bank, as well as a few places of tourist interest.
The only local supermarket, Hélio's, is located in the north of the centre and is open Monday to Saturday from 9:00am. It closes at 19:00 on weekdays and at 18:00 on Saturdays.
Sights and attractions
The centre of Lajes is adorned with the beautiful 18th century Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, with typical Azorean architecture. The church is freely accessible throughout the day.
On the outskirts of the town you can admire the beautiful lighthouse. Like most of the other active lighthouses in Portugal, it is a military facility, so you can't go inside, but you can take photos of the lighthouse without any worries.
Lajes is also the only town on the island with a cargo port.
